Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  How long does a pelvic health physiotherapy session take?

An initial assessment typically takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a follow up session's lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.

Q. How much does a physiotherapy session cost?

The initial assessment costs 99 euros. Follow up sessions are 65 euros. We accept card and cash payments.

Q When is the clinic open?

We are currently open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Early morning slots can be facilitated.

Q. What can I expect during my physiotherapy session?

At the start of the first session, we will discuss in detail the issue which has brought you to physiotherapy. We will also chat about your past medical history, any surgeries, allergies etc.

Following this, a physical assessment will take place. This will look at posture, general movement and mobility, followed by a specific hands-on assessment of the bony pelvis, hips, lower and mid-back, ribcage, abdomen as indicated.

Towards the end of the assessment, an internal vaginal examination may be performed. This is helpful in determining the tone, strength and quality of the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding tissues. It also is helpful in assessing the position of the pelvic organs such as the bladder, the bowel and the uterus. This is never mandatory. A client may decide during the session that they do not feel comfortable to go ahead with the examination. If a client requests, they may have a chaperone present for the vaginal examination.

Upon completion of the assessment, a treatment plan will be devised with the client, which will typically contain a home exercise programme among other elements.

Q. I am 9 weeks pregnant, can I attend a physiotherapy session?

We don't see clients before 16 weeks gestation. Furthermore, if you are not in pain we would recommend waiting until mid to end of the second trimester to attend for an initial assessment of the pelvis, abdomen and pelvic floor in preparation for labour and delivery.

Q. I have some complications in my pregnancy, can I attend for physiotherapy?

We assess complicated cases on an individual basis. The best thing is to call or email to discuss what is going on, and we can determine if physiotherapy will be appropriate for you.

Q. How soon after I have delivered my baby can I attend physiotherapy?

Following your 6 week check-up with your GP or Obstetrician.

Q. I have an appointment for physiotherapy, but I have my menstrual period. Should I still attend?

Yes, absolutely! The vaginal assessment is only one component. If a client feels comfortable, we can still proceed with the vaginal assessment and manage the bleeding discreetly. However, it is perfectly fine to defer the vaginal assessment to the next session. As stated above, a vaginal assessment is never mandatory.

Q. My baby is 7 years old! Is it too late for me to attend physiotherapy to help with my incontinence symptoms?

Not at all! The assessment and treatment techniques are helpful whether your baby is 7 or 27 years old.

Q. I am after having gynae surgery, when can I attend physiotherapy?

You can discuss this with your surgeon at your postop check-up. Alternatively call or email to discuss your individual case, and we can decide what the most appropriate course of action is.

Q. What do I wear to my physiotherapy session?

Comfortable clothing such as leggings or tracksuit bottoms are preferable. These are easier to move in and to palpate through.

Q. Is there parking for my car at the clinic?

Yes, there is parking available. The clinic is situated at the back of the house, and there is plenty of parking space available here.

Q. Can I bring my baby to my physiotherapy session?

Yes, pre-crawlers are welcome to attend your session with you. The clinic space is hazardous for older babies who are up and moving, so they are not permitted.
